Tang Sanzang (Zhang Wen), ein buddistischer Mönch, pilgert von China nach Indien, um eine Dorfgemeinschaft vor drei einfallenden Dämonen zu beschützen. Eine große Hilfe ist ihm dabei die Dämonenjägerin Miss Duan (Qi Shu), für die er zunehmend Gefühle entwickelt. Die Geschichte umfasst nicht zuletzt Sanzangs Begegnung mit dem Affenkönig, die ihn stark verändert.
